“ALLOY” is the melting together of five musicians, becoming a strong, melodious and rough body of sound. Reflecting her love for lyrical trombonists, melancholic guitar trios, Afro-Latin rhythms, Black US- American music traditions and improvised music, the compositions of bandleader and trombonist Marleen Dahms express an urge to connect with emotions through music. Her first album „Running and Belonging“ is a reflection on identity, the worlds order and disorder, present responsibilities and the searching for home.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Music expresses the personality of those who create it. It is a vessel of cultural identity and a voice for the lived experiences and emotions of the musician. What is commonly referred to as “jazz” originated within the Black community in the United States. The roots and cultural identity of this music are deeply intertwined with the lived experiences of Black people.

If music is an expression of personality, shaped profoundly by one’s own identity, then why do I make music that is fundamentally influenced by, or even built upon, Black US-American music traditions and improvised music, when my own cultural background is entirely different? To what extent can I truly understand this music, when my experiences are so unlike those from which it was born? In what way can I express myself through this music, how authentic is it, and  can I contribute anything to it? Could I express myself more fully through music that arises from my own cultural context? And what, ultimately, is my own cultural identity? What does identity actually mean?

The album Running and Belonging explores these questions. It seeks to process emotions and lived experiences, both my own and those of previous generations, collectively and individually – that are connected to me and my cultural identity, through music.
